Spinal Tap

#1 Post by Captainkirk »

Some of you might recall I posted a few videos of home-brewed spine testers. Most of them looked pretty "Rube Goldberg" to me; some more than others
I cobbled up something that worked...kinda-sorta...but I wasn't happy with it. The pointer scale just would not stay consistent.
So now (to quote James Brown) "Papa's got a brand new bag"
I can't say much more right now except it involves this feller:

Back in the day when I used wood I made a spine tester using the caliper from an arrow straighter that I had for aluminum arrows. It was a very ugly contraption made from wood and using ibolts and a two pound bolt and brass washers. It did measure deflection though, I don't remember the chart I was using to convert the amount of deflection to spine numbers. My point is that you can do a lot of things yourself and looks like your onto something Kirk!

I have not given up on the dial indicator, fellers. I just haven't figured out how to incorporate it yet. The scale method really works pretty well.

I'd imagine the indicators travel restriction would be a limiting factor.

He has a full inch of travel .
To bad you don't know a tool maker that could show you how to set it up .

 I sorta had that part figured out, I just can't get a follower fabricated that will not hang up or stick. Plus, the plunger tension puts a pre-set on the spine bend. But yeah, I'd take advice from a tool and die guy...if I knew one...LOL!

Mount it underneath so you don't have to compress the spindle .
That will also accommodate different diameter shafts and wont need to be reset as much .
Adjust your hook so it will reach over the indicator , and the weight will be below it .

So these spine indicators only move less then an inch when 2 lbs are applied to the center? I had way more flex in my mind then that for some reason.
