Five rings down. Finished the chase today and the ring is eh. I have at least four inches that must come off at least one side and the fissure in the middle. Layout is not gonna be easy but we are not quite there. Several big knots to carefully work down. However progress is forward moving. I do love wood working even if this stave is a pain in the rear.

Wow Dave,

Maybe I should try making a bow the hard way! I have never tried a self bow. Well I take that back, I made many 40 some years ago as a kid. I cut, carved, and whittled many willow branches and made bows from them. They all broke very fast, all but one. For some reason, somehow I got maybe 200 shots out it. They were all maybe 25# if that. If was a blast back then. It wasn't until, say 7 years or so back, I found out that some Indians did make bows from Willow. WOW!
I have heard and been told that your not a Bowyer till you've made a wooden bow. Who knows? Maybe I'll have to try.

I have been following your thread. It's kinda out of my element. I hope you manage to get the bow you desire out of that stave. That propeller twist looks nasty.

You would probably knock it out of the park! Yeah, the propeller is looming over me... Got the cabinet scrapers and rasp today so now it is time to work those knots down a bit and may get some wood of the belly of the stave!

Well I have a violation. But it’s a natural one. The other three knots cleaned up nicely but the massive one is right where a limb will be. Not sure it can be in a limb and the bow survive and I will probably have to rasp it out. However if I rasp it out I will have to limit the limb width to 1.5 inches which is narrower than I wanted. Additionally, I will have to line the bow up with the fissure to avoid the not. Next step is laying out the bow and it’s not gonna be easy.

Mike says leave the knot in the limb as is. Interesting. Well people we are further than the first attempt. Time to layout the bow. Probably Saturday.
