I found a new to me source to get stabilized wood for making knife scales.
The cost is almost half of what I was paying.
They also sent a couple of gifts with the order.

What did knife makers do to wood scales before this stabilizing process was developed? Aren't there still many knives around from the old days with oil finished wood scales that were simply aged or kiln dried and then had a finish applied? I see scales like that for $5.oo or so online. I've even been turned loose in the scrap pile of wood working shops years ago and found some nice pieces of burled walnut for scales.
As I look through the many wood handled kitchen knives I've been finding, I see some Old Hickory scales that have dried and shrank, with many leaving gaps, but also many other brands from the 50's, some with nice pieces of rosewood, that look good as new. Most all of those old companies are long gone.

I might get into knife making... I really want to become a craftsman of something and am looking at taking some local classes on forging.
Nothing clears a troubled mind like shooting a bow.

Dave, If your ever get your hands wet in forging I have some old files I could send you to practice on.
Grizzly, I have a couple of carbon knives my maternal grandpa gave me that are great blades, but the handles have shrank and left gaps. I use one of them regularly, a large french style chef knife. I'd love to one day re-handle that blade, so it can look as good as it cuts.
If you are looking for nice small pieces of wood for knife handles talk to your bowyers! I got a box of beautiful hardwood bow scraps from maddog archery, only cost me shipping. lots of pieces were perfect size for knife scales or stick knife handles. If you glue 2 pieces together your options are limitless.
