Native American Culture and Influence
OK, the title of this thread should make the PC Police happy... Me; I still call 'em Indians. When we were kids we played cowboys and Indians, not Bovine Relocating Anglo-Saxon Immigrants and Native Americans...
But for me, that's when it started; playing cowboys and Indians got my interest up in the Indian culture and at an early age, I began to read everything I could get my hands on about the various cultures, customs, lifestyles, etc...and to make a long story short, that was the beginning of my yearning to shoot a bow and arrow. Even though I'm told there is a smidgen of Indian blood on my dad's side (unconfirmed), I'm sure if there was you'd need an electron microscope (or a DNA test) to find it! Don't know too many blue-eyed, blond Native Americans...just sayin'.
No matter. I think the culture, history, and self-sufficient lifestyle of the original inhabitants of this continent are fascinating to say the least. So if you, like myself, have a yen for the cultures of the past, here is the place to discuss anything that floats your boat (or birch bark canoe, as the case may be).

Hunting arrowheads and attempting to make them is what ultimately got me into trad bow archery and hunting.

Agreed, by one who does not live it but used to practice federal Indian law, as it’s known.
The (mis)appropriation of Native culture is a pretty warm topic in some circles. I’ll be interested to see where this thread goes.

Either way is OK by me, Graps. You don't necessarily have to live it to appreciate it in my book. Just as there are trad shooters who don't hunt, yet appreciate those who do. At any rate, I'd just like to get some conversation going on the topic; I still find it fascinating.graps wrote:The trouble with this one Kirk , is some talk it and some live it .

My family (the Billingtons) were one of the first people to set foot in the new world. John Billington came over on the Mayflower. His family befriended Squanto (or was it the other way around)

Ive always had a passion for the first people’s culture. Ive always wanted to learn their ways and their crafts. So I studied and practiced and set about making items. I enjoy making all my hunting gear from scratch (Bows, arrows, fletchings, broadheads, knives, tipi, moccasins, etc.)

I just enjoy making stuff with natural/renewable resources. I like to work with hides.
