New bobcat hat for a friend

#1 Post by dhaverstick »

I made a new friend last year named Joe Hollingshad and found out that he was ate up with blackpowder hunting like I am. He invited me over to his place to hunt and we spent the weekend in our leathers and eventually both killed does with our smokepoles.

Over the course of the weekend, Joe mentioned that he had a bobcat hat that he loved but somehow it disappeared years ago. To thank him for his hospitality, I decided to have one made for him. I bought some nice hides from a guy and gave them to another friend of mine, Brian Peterson, to make the hat. Last night, Brian sent me these photos of the finished product. I am so tickled because I will get see Joe this weekend at a traditional archery event and be able to give him his present. I thought the hat turned out well.

Well that's cool!....and a heck of a nice gesture too, Darren!

I've seen lots of various Mountain man type hats made from many different furs.....but this is the first one I've seen done with bobcat. Looks much better then I'd of ever guessed! I still want a bobcat belly hat too, to go well with my gray whiskers but I'm not sure if I want the Mountain man style, or a Trooper, or Cossack. Hmmmmm......

Jason, my buddy, Brian Peterson, can fix you up!. He's made a couple of short brimmed beaver hats that look really sharp. Here's a photo of him wearing one.

I've also seen a Cossack style hat he made of a black bear hide. It reminded me of the hat the guards wear at Buckingham Palace.

All you need to do is send him the hides. I got the bobcat hides for this hat from a feller on Etsy.

So your friend takes the tanned pelts or does he do the tanning?

Either way I can do, I can always send them to my tannery first. Being a trapper myself, coming up with the cat pelts won't be much of an issue. Gives me a reason to bust out the steel and snares again.

Curious on his prices Darren....shoot me a pm?

Very nice gesture, nice to have a good friend!
I like fur hats, but don't look good in them. This one was made in Russia, all the tags are in Russian. Found it in a junk shop $20.00. I just had to have it.
