Mail man and plastic fletching

#1 Post by Jamesh76 »

Well, I got my 200x 5/16 shafts in the mail today. Looking forward to sorting, weighing and spine them. Out of the 200, I usually get bout 140 usable shafts in about the following spines. 15×50+, 60x45-50, 60x40-45, 25x38-40 with about 40 is able youth shafts I typically donate and 20 or so with bad run out or knots. Not too bad for a 55$ investment shipped considering a dozen Pemium shafts would run at least 40$ or 12. I dont mind a little run out, but anything that is questionable i throw out or make garden stakes. So having a bunch of these I am thinking about using some 4" 3 x fletch plastic vines with shell casings glued onto the end for stump and aerial targets.

Yeah, it will be. I have to straighten each one too, before I can spine them. I'm in no hurry though. Just looking at a few of them, there seems to be some really stiff shafts in the bunch. Sure would like a few of them to go 55-60. Just so I have them if I need. I typically shoot 40-50# bows and is always seems that anything which spines in that range shoots well out of any of my bows. The new 50# super mag, seemed to shoot 45 ish spine woods the best. I'm not exactly sure. But it seems old spines go along with a 125 grain point as for a standard with 11/32 shafts. I wonder if since I'm shooting 100 grain points of that's why I can get by with the weaker shafts. They still weigh round 500 grains for a 29" shaft with 100 gr points.

nice some of those plastic vanes are really soft and work well with trad bows, they are a lot cheaper than feather too.

I might be weird but spine checking and sorting those shafts sounds like a fun project to me.

Here is where I get them. Dont expect top notch, but they work for me. I always buy 200 because over $50 and shippings free. I seen more run out in this group than the last. Some knots as well. As long as I get 25% usable shafts, I save money. I dont worry about breaking or losing them either. https://woodcrafter.com/5-16-x-36-birch ... ge-of-100/

Not yet, any with bad run out or knots, I inspect and throw out. Usually they break when I flex the shaft by hand. Just as possible to happen with any shaft.
