Honestly James I have no idea what that is and am not sure if I have ever done it. Could you perhaps elaborate?

Yes, let me see if I can find a link which explains it. The amount of typing on a phone to explain would be difficult.

Great thing about these type of sites, we are always learning from one another, this is a good tip. Been a long time since I did any wood shafts but if I remember correctly the spine can be different from from different sides of the grain on shaft. I may not be remembering right though.

You are correct on spine being different. However, in reality it's not enough to really make a difference for a finger shooter. But it is more consistent. Myself, I worry more about grain orientation incase of arrow breakage. From my experiance the grain or arrow orientation typically follows cross grain direction and nock alignment. Most know I shoot alot of 5/16 birch. Grain lines in most of them are very difficult to read.

Hmm. I've really never really had a turning issue with spruce.

And you may not. When I spine them, 1-3# is typically all I see in difference of orientation. When you buy them they are grouped in 5# groups. I still concentrate more on the arrow in grain orientation. If I shoot left 2", I shoot left 2". Most archers can't maintain a 2 or 3" group anyways. I'm more concerned with which way the arrow may splinter or break.

I will add, if there are any run out grain, keep them to the top.
That can help prevent ( incase the arrow breaks ) driving a very large sliver into your hand or arm.
