Re: Hunting the Osage Bow build along
thanks, carp. I actually watched a video on how to deal with this type of a knot in the limb. I am going to follow that method. This is harder than I anticipated, but I do love the look of self-bows......

I gotta say, that bow is going to have some very neat character.

Man is it nice to be done with ring chasing. I do feel that if I did it again I would be light years faster. That last ring was a breeze. Today was laying out the bow and it was so much fun. I laid it out as a 62 inches and also as 60 just depending on how far my end crack goes. Both lengths allow the fissure to be rasped out. Here are some pics.

Pics are backward view from ground up. Limb with knot is the bottom limb. Wanted to make the knot on top but it would not lay out right. Every curve of the bow was taken into natural account. All but the handle and tips were freehanded.

Ah, yes, improvising.

Re: Hunting the Osage Bow build along
You all like Barbie well she makes another appearance! Today was roughing out the bow or at least starting to. The shavings are really flying now and it’s beginning to look like something more than a stick. Now that I have learned the very trying lessons of ring chasing, hope begins to seep back in. I chopped the bow down to about half an inch of final length, removing the cracked side first to make sure it is completely gone. In the event that the first cut didn’t remove the entire crack I would have had to re lay out the bow. Fortunately for me all went well during this stage.
Osage is finally starting to show me its merits and the draw knife has become an old friend. Ever since I was a child working in my dads workshop (he is a master boat builder) I have always been drawn to hand tools. I have a few power tools but that is how I knew I would not be building laminated bows (I’ll leave that to Jose). I understand now the name of the book, Torges knew that seeking the bow in the stave would be a hunt in itself. How poetic my hunting season without a single sighting of deer, and the initial struggles of this piece of Osage. Now, now the first sightings have happened and the woods are before me with new vigor. Huzah! I always remember people telling me in hard times “we are not out of the woods yet” and I would reply “good, I am not ready to leave”. As Osage is equally good in tension and compression, I must also become so in my patients with it. This twig has many more lessons to teach us all. Stay tuned.

It's good that you are getting some confidence in it now.
