Group Board Bow Build Along- See link to my first build

#1 Post by Jamesh76 »

How many would be interested in doing a group bow board build along? We would start with gathering materials etc. Once everyone was ready, start on bows together and share progress for critiques? Would be slow going so everyone would have time to be close to the same position in the build? Most material needed people likely have at home. Not really much of an investment to start. I would estimate $30 to get your own material.

What tools are needed?

Board oak, maple or hickory oak preferred
Handsaw, bandsaw, drawknife or heavy file to cut outline
Tillering tree or tillering board. Can be made from scraps 2x4 stud for tree or 1x3 for board. If tree, 1 pulley and a luggage scale if board, you can use a bathroom scale to check weight
Chain Saw File- for filing nocks
4 way file or wood file to cut shelf and shape handle
Tillering, can use butcher knife, draw knife, hand plane, rasp or stanley sureform rasp
You will need to make a tillering gizmo- scrap wood, a nut and pencil
String or string material.
wood glue
sandpaper
shellac or any other wood finish/sealer

You could get by with just a piece of wood and a file.

I was thinking along the lines of February, maybe March. Give people plenty of time to prepare.

If you have or may have interest in this, start looking for a 1x2x6' oak, maple or hickory board. Grain will need to run straight end to end on all 4 sides. It may take a while to find a good board. Plan on needing 8" of a hardwood board for a handle. Depending on draw length. Draw length x2 + 10" for handle etc. I would recommend a 66" nock to nock.bow for 28" draw. 68" board length plus 8" -10" for handle based on preference. So 76-78" of board. Any type or hardwood can be handle.
