Slow conversation so how about a new hickory bow?

#1 Post by Jamesh76 »

This bow was a complete mess. I cut this stuff in Feb of this year. Started out as a 66” stiff handle bow. Started working it, it was still green sat it out to dry for a while more after a heat treat and adding some backset. A few weeks later started working on it again and screwed up the tiller near a tip and had an awful hinge. Sat it out in the burn pile. Brough it back inside cut off hinge and handle to make a bendy. Got it tillered and flipped the tips. 2nd tip had a crack about 4” down from the nock. I was able to sand it out. Kept working it and ended up 58”ntn, 36#. I heat treated it again, stained and sat aside. Got short on time and sealed it without rechecking the tiller. Added sinew over where the crack was, also over a knot. I then wrapped the other end to match. Added a bit of leather on handle and wrapped with jute. All stain is walnut, clear spray sealant, burnt in specs and added a 16 strand b55 as I like thick strings. After pictures, I didn’t like tiller so I reworked it a little as the top limb is a bit stiff. Looks a little off at brace but pulls evenly to 28”

Glad you finally got a bow out of it, you have a lot more patience than i have , I would have gave up along time ago. Great looking bow.

Just got done shooting it some at maybe 10 yards. Hits right where it should. Can only hear the arrow impact the target. No noticeable hand shock. Cast is decent for what it is. Still feel the wood is a bit green.
