How about a Coyote back quiver

#1 Post by Graps »

So I have this coyote pelt that was gifted to me by my friend James Haney.
He suggested that I make a quiver with it. I have never worked with hair on leather before so I don't know how this is going to work out.
I have asked questions at the Tandy Leather store and it's at the point where I am now just procrastinating getting started.
So here I go, and hopefully it turns out well because I will have only one shot at it. :?
This is what I have to work with.

I got a veg tanned shoulder, 5oz and I bought a strap of 7oz and I got some barge cement hide glue.
I buy the straps pre cut because they are not very expensive and for me to make one takes about an hour of careful cutting.
I'm using 5oz leather because a back quiver needs to be flexible and I'm going to laminate the yote hide over it and that is going to add weight too.

Here I go.
Lay out the cut lines on the flesh side an make sure they are square.
I'm making this 14" x 20"

Got the piece of leather cut and holes down one side for stitching.
Took this picture and posted it to take a break from the marathon hole punching.

Design change all ready.
While punching the holes, I decided to punch more.
I'm going to add a wrap leather cap to the mouth of the quiver to help from damaging the pelt with arrows.
I'm concerned about stabbing an arrow into the yote hide and tearing it.

Then using the template that fit properly, I cut and fit the bottom from 9oz leather.
After dry fitting, I used Barge cement and glued it in place. And it fits tight but I needed some weight to hold the sides together.
I'll let this set for a few hours, or probably overnight.
Then I will use a 1/16" drill and drill holes at a 45° angle for stitching.
