Form

#1 Post by stumper »

Lately I have been doing in interesting experiment on form. I have been trying to shoot more like Howard Hill. And while I have shot a great many good groups, I seem to struggle more with consistency on his style of release than ever before.

In his style of release you anchored to your face and while your hand remains stationary you simply release the string. His form maintains that you're able to obtain a more consistent release. Some aspects of his form I have always done in my shooting like split vision with the target in focus, However, Some things like head cant are new to me. This morning after shooting the challenge I went back to my own style of release which I find a less fatiguing and the results were eye opening. My style is shooting has simply been the most comfortable way I have found for my body type AKA T. Rex arms. What proceeded was a four shot group at 18 yards (removing the arrow each shot and walking back to the line) under an inch total.

Not only was my form more natural (no thinking involved) and comfortable but the results were better. Perhaps this is a different strokes for different folks sort of deal. Thoughts?

Boy stumper there is endless opinions on this subject. So imo the most important aspect to shooting is a consistent anchor correct form with back tension. And when you start trad shooting get a pro to help. With that said people have many techniques for consistent anchor. But if you dont get those items down from the get go with a well tuned bow you have know reference to fall back on if your shooting performance goes south. So you struggle to fix the problem. Im speaking from experience. I had to start over and thats no fun. Bad habits are hard to break. My 2 cents worth.

Yeah. My old shooting form is more comfortable and yields better results. It was a good experiment and am always looking to get better...

I thought once!
Seriously though, I have been guilty too many times of trying to figure out something to make me shoot better, the results usually were reversed! But I know it will happen again so I will just say... carry on!

I didn't think either when it came to the shot which mattered. The hardest for me to figure out was split or 3 under.... I always practiced 3 under but every time I had a deer under me I would find myself grabbing the string split. This happened the first 2 times, I now practice and shoot split only.
