Re: Stumper's 2019 Tag Soup Thread
Will and I hunted 2 different hunts evening last night and morning this morning with no success. Hopefully this year we will return to Dewey Wills. Where we have seen multiple deer before. However if we remain unsuccessful this season which is our 6th season on public land with 0 shots fired with more than 40 hunts and as many scouting trips, then we will be retiring from public land hunting in louisiana. Of course we will continue to try and develop connections for private land hunts and will eventually when the time is right attempt to buy some land of our own. But until that time we are pretty tired of zero hunts. We have seen 6 deer total and 4 of them were on 1 hunt in Dewey Wills last year. Time in the woods is valuable in itself so we will likely continue taking trips that are not hunt focused. Because the hunting trips are very exhausting in nature and with all that work not producing anything we have decided to not continue to do it should this season proven unsuccessful in terms of a harvest. In future years we likely will go out of state and will probly have more money for hunts that will likely prove fruitful.

Nothing clears a troubled mind like shooting a bow.
Re: Stumper's 2019 Tag Soup Thread
The elkseeker has proven to be the ideal bow in a tree stand and spoils me with its short nature. It did however get its 1st few dings maring a small part of the finish by falling on some rocks with I will have to repair which is also disappointing. I do expect hunting bows to get scratched and dinged but this stinks as it was preventable. See photo there are about 4 of these on the left side of the bow. The good news is they are all superficial and the finish took the damage not the bow.
After striking out we went to another WMA shooting range on the way home. It took a lot of shots using the elk seeker on 3-D targets as far as 50 yd away and it performed wonderfully. I did manage to hit the 2 inch bullseye at 50 which was pretty cool. Was also able to hit several aerial targets thrown by will. Me and this bow definitely get along.

Re: Stumper's 2019 Tag Soup Thread
40 sits in 6 years. Your not getting out enough. That's under 7 hunts per year. I know life and family slows you down at times. However 7 hunts per year isnt enough to figure anything out on any piece of property. Sure you scout them areas. The more you walk around you lower your chances. I maybe walk through hunting areas once per year and usually late winter after season. I study aerial and topo maps to establish interesting spots on public, then establish coordinates to get there. I probably have 30 sits per year I dont see anything but I keep going. 2 so far this year. Keep at it.

Sorry to hear about the dings in your new bow Dave.
I know it's hard, especially when not seeing much game. We've all been through it, and your day is coming. Don't let it get you down.

Dave, were you successful as a firearm hunter before? I believe I heard you mention it. If so, since hunting traditional now what has changed other than using a bow now.
Re: Stumper's 2019 Tag Soup Thread
Yes I was. The difference.... I hunted in Florida. First off I grew up in Florida and I know the places and second when people find out you hunt they invite you to their property the very next weekend. People in Louisiana are stingy and selfish compared to Floridians. I may have a really good hunt in Mississippi coming up though.

Re: Stumper's 2019 Tag Soup Thread
I have 4 kids under 7 and work shift work. If I hunted every weekend I am off during deer season that would be 8 sits. I have lost track of how many hunts it has been it's well over 40. When it cools off during the week I go during the week by myself. There have been as many scouting camera trips as hunts. Not counting the bows it's been thousands of dollars in equipment and gas and misc. I cant keep justifying it. Its not producing anything. In about a year I'll be out of debt completely and wont have a problem just throwing money at hunting. Back in florida our family ate only meat that I shot for over a year. When we moved to France from florida, I had to give away 100 plus pounds of deer meat, 30 pounds of freshwater fish, and 20 pounds of dove that I had shot. The only thing that had changed really is I live in Louisiana now. I'm still going to hunt. I have a contact in Mississippi with some wonderful property that has scores of deer on. In louisiana the public land is like an island in a sea of private land that all drop feed. The way to catch a deer is to get them coming from or going to bed on WMA land.Jamesh76 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 22, 2019 12:58 pm 40 sits in 6 years. Your not getting out enough.
