Dangle Rattling
Sounds stupid (perhaps there is a more awesome name)but we started it two years ago and its been a very positive addition to the bag of calling tricks.
Deer don't fight up I trees. Sparring or fighting should include hoof pounding and leaf rustle at ground level for realism. Rattling with a real set of large antlers is a two handed activity meaning you don't have ahold of your bow and if deer are close you have to go through the motion of putting away the antlers and picking up your bow. Dangle rattling is a one handed activity and you don't have to put anything away, simply ley go of the rope (which is tethered to the tree your in.) The dangle rope is used to wrap the two antlers together for transport.
Just another way to go about it.

The Joy is in the doing.
Re: Dangle Rattling
Neat trick! Not being able to see the rope in the video some of the time made it funny, looked like two antlers attacking each other.

Re: Dangle Rattling
Saw that somewhere with 3 antlers...not just two... sure makes sense...

Lol! What will they think of next! Never seen that before.....
The element of surprise can never be replaced by persistence.
Re: Dangle Rattling
That's pretty dang sharp!
Re: Dangle Rattling
haha what a great and simple idea. I wonder if the deer ever set around and talk about us like we do about them,,,
"those hoomuns don't smell, can barely hear, and can't see at night, but they will hide in trees and will try to trick you with all sorts magic flying antlers"

Re: Dangle Rattling
I've never successfully rattled in a buck to get a look or shot at. Sometimes I wonder if it's because they spot my movement & slip out of the area without me ever seeing them. I have grunted them in a few times, but that doesn't require all the movement of rattling. I'm going to definitely try this "Dangle Rattling" to see how it works. I really like the added sound of thumping on the ground & rustling of the leaves. I think it'll have to wait until next year though.... we just got 18" of snow in the last day & a half and it's still coming down. I was going to go out today, but I've been busy cleaning the driveway & taking my wife to work in my 4x4 truck.
Re: Dangle Rattling
deer are such incredible critters!
The data says if there is NO COMPETITION between bucks for doe breeding, rattling doesn't work... I know in most of the areas I hunted in PA, it never worked...made a few look, but as some of the hunting videos are fond of pointing out, if you don't have a thick understory under your stand, the deer looks right there and see NOTHING, he's not coming to investigate where if it's thick around your set up, they have to come THERE to see what's up...
Decoys take up too much effort to drag into the woods and keep odor free...
I never had a bunch of good horns to tie and try... bigger the better is suggested...
Deer in my areas up in PA were still chasing and breeding young does in late January...no competition there... so why get in a fight or chance to get your tail kicked when plenty of ladies running around unescorted...Might be a factor...!
