Im ok with it and think its fine where its legal for those who want to use it, but as far as im concerned and just imo its all pretty much worthless anyway, so no great loss there. It is a ridiculous and encroaching law though.
Agreed. Funny thing is, our local Bass Pro is stocked to the gills full of attractants, mineral licks food plot seeds and the like...in Illinois where none of it is legal!
I was aware of the minerals and such (hunting over bait) but had never considered attractants to be illegal before (though I never bothered much with that foolishness) Like you guy I always figured it's best to get yourself odor-free and play the wind. Deer are NOT stupid nor are they easily fooled.

I just hang my hunting clothing out side about 3 weeks before hunting season. Also my safety ropes and harness.
Think about it, a skunk will spray at any Danger signs! I don't use it. Don't pump gas wearing your hunting boots.

Captainkirk wrote:Another thing related to my PHL stupidity thread; apparently, in Illinois ANY attractant scent is considered illegal. Seriously? I would imagine a gung-ho game warden could make the jump between that and cover scents and issue a violation; you'd have to attend a hearing to get it cleared.
You piqued my interest on this as I hunt public land in Illinois. I just got reading/glancing at the regulations this year. I didn't see anything regarding an attractant scent being illegal. I'll reread it again and ask the next officer I see. Regardless, a little respect can go along way with those placed in a position of authority, just sayin'.

Jeremy:
From the 2017-18 Illinois DNR Hunting and Trapping Digest, page 15:

Hunting Deer Over Salt, Mineral or Bait
It is illegal to
feed deer at any time and/or take
deer by the use or aid of bait or baiting of any
kind. Despite their widespread availability,
deer baits and attractants commonly sold in
stores are also illegal to use at any time
except for use by properly licensed owners of
captive cervids while feeding captive animals.

For the purpose of this section, “bait” means
any material, whether liquid or solid, including
food, salt, minerals and other products that
can be ingested, placed or scattered in such
a manner as to attract or lure white-tailed
deer. “Baiting” means the placement or scat-
tering of bait to attract deer.

I'm actually not sure what, exactly they are saying in the paragraph below...is it OK, or not?

For the purposes of taking white-tailed deer,
nothing in this section shall be construed to
prevent the manipulation, including mowing
or cutting, of standing crops as a normal
Illinois Department of Natural Resources
agricultural or soil stabilization practice, food
plots or normal agricultural practices, includ-
ing planting, harvesting and maintenance,
such as cultivating, or the use of products de-
signed for scent only and not capable of in-
gestion, solid or liquid,
placed or scattered, in
such a manner as to attract or lure deer.

Sure sounds like these two consecutive paragraphs are contradicting each other, or are open to interpretation by both DNR personnel and hunters. And we know who wins...

Thank you for inserting those paragraphs. I think the key there is the line about being able to ingest it.

I found out last night that there is an email address on the dnr website for questions regarding the rules and regs. I'm going to try and fire one off today. I'll let you know if I get a response back and if so what they say.

I didn't mean to hijack this posters thread. I submitted an email though asking an IL conservation officer for clarification. I don't want a ticket!
