Vocal deer and other deer things

#1 Post by jaydee2trad »

Of course today, everyone knows about deer bleats and grunts etc but when I was first bow hunting, especially out of trees, the only call that I knew of was a fawn in distress call. My hearing has not been quite what it used to be from being on the flightline in the Air Force. But one time I was about to lower the boom on a doe (early season) when I suddenly realized that she had two fawns with her. So it became a watch and learn time for me. When I gre up, deer were very seldom seem and were making a comeback. I had no one to teach me about deer hunting at all but that it was done with guns and dogs. So everything that I knew had come from bowhunting articles in magazines etc in the mid 70s and only a few of those. So now I began to hear not only the doe "talking" to her fawns but them as well. Also got to see her kick the snot out them a couple of times to put them in their place (something that our society seems to have forgotten.) I was very surprised at how vocal they really were as they slipped along. There is nothing like having deer walking under you and acting natural out in the woods. Got to see a lot of deer things in these mountains, even watched a doe get taken down by coyotes. This spured me on to do my best to take out every coyote that I got a chance on. As time went on, I began seeing deer in up to 7 or more in a little group. Usually a dominate doe, figured she was the grandma to some of them. She seemed to be in control although occasionally I would see some dissagreement in the ranks. I have watched numerous times, does standing up on their hind legs and duking it out as well as some biting. Brother they could flay away too. So much for being so docile and innocent. Learned a lot about the does when I began calling like a fawn in distress with my own mouth. Some would come busting in and others would be sneaking in and checking everything out. Some had their own fawns with them but most did not. Getting blown at, used to gthink it was always me that they were blowing at but after watching them in huge numbers in very large felds, they blow at everything including other deer. Now my hearing is lousy and I wear hearing aids so that they don't just suddenly appear so often. Nothing like hearing one belch or fart right under you, sounded like my son was there LOL. Now we have calls for everything and they are still learning new things about them. I still use my mouth, seems to work okay for me. JD

It's amazing what we can see and learn if we simply sit still.

My hearing is terrible and still getting worse. Even the cicadas aren't load anymore. My wife asks, did you hear that? Nope, not unless it's loader then the ringing in my ears. I remember years ago when the local Police Chief let me borrow a set of amplified ear muffs to take hunting. I was up in a tall tree stand when a small plane flew over nearby. I had to hold on to the stand to keep myself from jumping out of it. The engine was now so load that I thought it was at tree top level headed right for me.

When I finally bought my own set and later used hearing aids the sounds of the woods came alive again. I always hated to take them off at the end of the day out hunting and go back to the silence. I've worn out two sets. One was my father in laws and one I received through workman's comp. The church keeps coaxing me to go to the VA for a new pair but I believe that's about 2 hours away up in Peoria, Il. That's a long time to leave the wife alone, so it may not get done. I shouldn't have a problem getting them since the Army was willing to cut me orders to leave Viet Nam due to a hearing loss that developed in the mortar pits. I declined since I already was set up for a 4 month early out. The orders would have sent me elsewhere and I'd have had to stay in that much longer. By the time the 1st Sgt finally agreed to send me for a hearing test, I only had about a month left in country. I'd extended twice there and spent 2 years at the same location. A Catholic Seminary that the Army leased and then fortified as a MACV headquarters in the delta province capital of My Tho. I always smile when I look at the photo of the place and still see that cross on the top of the building. I'm told that today it is a communist police station and they won't allow any vets to go in and look around.

Hey, Grizzly, I got my hearing aids from the VA, on second set now and love them. I have the ones that go inside the ear. you should go get them, they will supply you with batteries for 6 months at a time too. I get my glasses there and see a retina specialist for my macular degeneration in my left eye. love the VA, at least here in Arkansas. Jerry

My Dad had macular degeneration in both eyes. I've got one of those charts I check occasionally to see if it is creeping up on me. So far I haven't noticed changes. I first became aware something was wrong 10 to 15 years ago when it seemed like one of the horizontal lines in my scope was bent. It was me, but it has not gotten any worse and I really don't notice it much. Actually, I don't look through scopes much lately either.

I thought that I was getting cataracts, the doc said yes but they were the least of my problems. I had just noticed that shooting my recurve had become more challenging

Hey Craig if you are that far away you should be able to get authorization to see someone local for your hearing. The VA has made some very good changes for those of us living aways from our nearest major VA facility. They have done that for me with the Gallbladder issues late 2018, Shoulder and Knee issues and even my glasses. Get your VA primary care physician to submit a consult.

Yes, I have top of the line hearing aids that I love via the VA. and I get 6 months of batteries at a time too. There should be a way for them to get hooked up with you these days.
