My son ran off with my Wolf book, circa 1967. I should make him give it back.

Mine are from the late 80’s and 90’s. Not quite as vintage as yours

Looks a lot easier than the way I've done it: I was taught to punch a few holes in the can, put in your cloth and close the lid... place the can on an open fire 'till smoke issues from the hole, then pull the can. When the smoke stops, the cloth is charred.

I've been doing fire things for some time. Some of my F/S pics. I also have some ferro rods I use.
