Penny Stove Build

#1 Post by stumper »

I am not the designer nor am I the first, but this build makes a consistent product that anyone can make. I believe there is a video somewhere of this method, but what fun is that. I am no craftsman and anyone can and should do this.

Materials.
Copper Penny. Must be copper new pennies melt.

Block of wood.

Drill or even push pin for a cork board will work. I like drill personally.

Fiberglass insulation optional (wicking material)

Two soda cans. Rinse if you use soda.

Knife, pliers, and scissors. Multi tool works great

Denatured Alcohol

Some way to start a fire. I love a rod and knife personally a single spark will start stove

Quality control dog

Whiskey.

Step 1 score can evenly about 1.25 to 1.75 inches high. The higher the bigger capacity the stove will have. Personally I don’t measure a thing on this build. I tilt my multi tool on its side on a cutting board.

Step four
Drill center holes.
Pick the center drill it. Drill a hole in front of it and one behind it in a line. The do the same to complete a box around center hole.

Make sure it’s small enough to cover with a penny.

Step five
Extend the square holes to side creating four holes on the rim. Then put an additional hole in between each giving you 8 then repeat giving you 16. Sorry pics are out of order. I’m doing this on my phone.

Once you have sixteen holes on the edge drill center hole one size bigger.

Step six

Put halves together do not press them. Use the wood block or similar instrument to tap them together evening and you will know when it’s done. You will have a sharp edge over hang and simply press it in. You want the top to over lap bottom for a better seal. Do it the other way and you will have leaky flames after awhile.

Fill stove let fuel sink in. Repeat till stove is full. Place penny on top and pool fuel on top of it. Purposely spill fuel on edges and on ground around. The stove needs to build up pressure to properly light. A single spark from fire steel will start it. 8000 Btus for 15 or more minutes. Change the coin to change flame size. Smooth coins have higher flames tha ridged coins (they allow pressure to escape more easily. Penny has highest flame, then nickel, dime and quarter for lowest setting. Look at that handsome fire steel from grant. What a pair it makes with that knife!

Hope you all enjoyed. Make your pot stand out of a metal coat hanger and bring two or three stoves to do multiple things at once. Clearly label your bottle of denatured alcohol so you don’t drink it.
