Darton Ranger refinish

#1 Post by Jamesh76 »

Well, my hunting partner normally shoots a wheel bow. He has shown some interest in trad bows. We typically exchange xmas gifts and he always gets items for my 2 smallest who are 16 and 14. Although they haven't exchanged yet. He got my son a range finder and my 14 y/o a huge acrylic paint set and items she wanted. Me, he got some top.notch camo. For my buddy, we have gotten him a nice compact pair of Nikon binoculars and a Benchmade Hidden Canyon knife. Sitting here tonight the light came on. Now is my chance. He has shot some of my bows and appears to.enjoy the challenge. He injured his shoulder years back and shoots about 53lbs with his wheel bow. Thinking..... I have 2x 40# Darton Rangers. One I shoot regularly and one i jut got with that 3 bow purchase on Ebay that had some chips in the finish. Well, i started sanding her down tonight. Got all the finish off, but left the numbers and sticker. I decided it was time for him to have a trad bow and arrows. I should be able to get the project done before he exchanges gifts with the kids which will likely be after Christmas due to our schedules. Here's how she looks after sanding.

What do you use for the finish?

I used 200 and 1000 grit. May be a couple sanding marks show when I'm done. But it should be pretty good. I think if I sand between coats, it helps them to not show also. I have trouble on the handle contours to get all smooth in the right direction.

I have had good luck using thin coats of tru oil applied with a finger

takes a while to get your coats built up but you get a nice smooth finish

Great idea, might just be the push he needs to bring him over to the trad side.
