We hunted very hard. This 68 year old climbed the hills or went down in the canyons every day along with Larry and Gary ( sounds like 2 guys with their own talk show) The elk just weren't vocalizing. We only heard a couple bugles the entire hunt and our calls went unanswered. We put on lots of miles. I lost 6 pounds ( too much work for only 6 pounds) and we spent many hours sitting and calling. Gary saw a group of 5 cows and one small 4X4 but they were 70 yards away and moving fast. The last day we saw two groups of elk but they were 300 yards away and out in the middle of a huge field and no way to get close or even move without being spotted.
I guess I am telling the story that Larry should be telling so I will let him tell his version when he gets a chance. I wish we had better news to share but I will let Larry tell you the rest. Mooseman ( Whitetail hunting in Illinois starts for us in 5 weeks. a 7 hour drive is not as far as Oregon and I can't wait. )

That's why they call it 'hunting' and not 'shooting'.
We are not guaranteed a prize.
I'd love to hear more details. It's still hunting whether you come back with game or not!

The getting out there is a joy in itself, bringing meat back would be icing on the cake. When Larry gets out of the doghouse he might tell more.

We ran into some pretty bad weather for over half the trip which pretty much shuts the bulls down for a while

I convinced gary to hunt the narrow part of the canyon directly below us while I went to an open area perhaps three hundred yards across.I approached the edge and quietly got into a favorable position.I did a locator bugle and got nothing.A second more aggressive bugle got an immediate response from a very large bull
