Would you?
Shoot a Doe during the rut or leave her alone with the intentions of using her as bait to lure a Buck in.

Re: Would you?
I usually shoot the first legal deer I see. I'm not a trophy hunter
Aim small, miss small!
Re: Would you?
I prefer a big doe cause they eat better .
I only pass on the little ones , and that's not for " ethical reasons " it's because the little ones don't have enough meat on them to be worth it .

Re: Would you?
Depends. If I am only after meat for the freezer and the doe is a big one, then I take the shot.
But, if it is early in the hunt and especially early in the season and I have my eyes and heart set on a nice buck, then I leave her as a decoy.
Over my years I've seen numerous bucks "seemingly" watch does from a distance in the shadows as if to see if it was safe to enter the area.
I will not shoot a small one for a couple of reasons. First, because as Graps stated there just isn't enough meat to make it worthwhile. Secondly I've seen several small does harvested that turned out to be this season's young bucks.

Hard to say since I've done both. Had a buddy last week that had several does under him and would not shoot, his words were "I ain't killing the bait", he got a big buck Saturday.

CD, this falls exactly under what I posted earlier this morning. Your friend followed his goals and his rules. Good for him.Carpdaddy wrote:Hard to say since I've done both. I would say I am a lot like this.......however, I will admit that I have shot smaller deer if I really needed to get the meat....

I'm primarily a meat Hunter but do admit that my neck swells up somewhat during the rut.
Re: Would you?
Would definitely pass on the doe. Already have a fat one in the freezer. But even if I didn't, would still pass on the doe and use her for bait.
