Re: Why archery?
like many others I started out with firearms....thru the years I was able to get better equipment and became abetter shot...after a while it got to the point that if I saw him I stood a very good chance of takeing him...don't want to sound like I'm bragging...but the point is hunting was losing that thrill..a good friend introduced me to archery...boy what a game changer.instead of sitting in abean field and waiting for a deer to step out I had to get in there and really learn how to hunt...learnt more about deer in 3 seasons of bowhunting then I did in 10 years of gun hunting.now if I can get within 15 yards of a doe I consider it a successful hunt....besides that ,in our area its a lot easier to get permission to bow hunt, especially if your a traditionalist...

I've heard others say the same, never had that issue. I guess my success rate was never all that good.swampkooter wrote:...if I saw him I stood a very good chance of takeing him...don't want to sound like I'm bragging...but the point is hunting was losing that thrill..
I just fell in love with bowhunting, and using trad gear is the ultimate test and use of your abilities!

Re: Why archery?
Another reason...archery is 'it' right now for me. Hard to explain, but I have had...and still do...a lot of hobbies over the years, each taking it's turn at the front of the line. Shooting my Baby Ben was replaced by guns as I grew older, and other things after that...coming back around to the mid-nineties when I got back into archery and compounds. But that died off after a while too...not because I got tired of it, but because I got tired of keeping up with the Jones's. In fact, I had second thoughts about buying a recurve, wondering "Do I really have time for another hobby?"
Fortunately, yes! Trad archery has pushed everything else aside and I really can't tell you why other than it has a relaxing, calming effect on me and unlike so many other hobbies, it's immediately accessible...string it up and step into the back yard. That, for me, is the kicker. You don't have to drive, you don't have to open your wallet, you don't have any setup, or cleanup afterward. You step out back and drill holes in a target.
Oh, sure....there's stuff to buy; arrows, targets, strings, rests, and tons of other doo-dads. But once you are set, it's shoot and smile. Few other hobbies can boast that sort of return on investment! In fact, every other hobby I have either costs a lot to get into it, or a lot to keep it up. Trad archery is the only one where a simple bow and a half-dozen arrows can give you dozens of hours of cost-free enjoyment and relaxation....with a desired result at the end! To be ready for hunting season! I, for one, am glad I found this hobby, and this forum. Together they have made all the difference.

Re: Why archery?
Amen Kirk; I know the feeling. This week is Muzzleloader season here in Ky, the weather has been awesome, and as much as it use to excite me instead of hunting I was out shooting my bow. Last week was Turkey season, this week muzzleloader so I haven't been in the woods, if it were just bow season I would be in a tree. Even if I do go this week I will carry a longbow, it's just what I enjoy.

In a addition to my love for solitude, woods, and nature. The primary reason that lead me to archery in general is geographic location, you can't use a rifle on Long Island. The reason I switched from a wheelie to stick, the challenges associated with instinctive shooting.
