Tuffhead flight troubles

Hey all. Here is the deal. I can use the same arrow, with loooong brass field tips Vintage puts out to match the 300gr tuffhead, shoot the arrow, and it flys great, even bare shaft its excellent. Slip it off and put on the tuffhead, and it flys wonky. Im running 3x4" fletching. Is that not enought to stabilize the big tuffhead? Whats going on? Never had these troubles with any other set up including grizzlys, stos, razorhead etc

Offhand, I'd say your are probably right. I would strip one of your arrows and try 3X5 or 4X4/4X5 to see if it makes a difference. Only one way to find out, Jase...

Looking at the Tuffhead design I don't understand that, it appears to be similar to the Grizzly, Abowyer brown bear, and many others. Guess you will be racking your brain like I was last week trying to remember what might have changed. Better get on it, season is upon us. Glad you found it now rather than hunting!

Never mind folks...Some how this morning,I shot bare shaft 4 times in a row and every shot was straight. I know better than that...should have shot it at least a dozen times. I got to watching the fletched field tip close, and by golly they were flying weak too...so I ripped off the fletching and you guessed it...WEAK. Tuffhead was just tellin me something was wrong. Cutting her down now...

Some of those "little things" will put a feller in panic mode quick with season being so close! Can't imagine how folks can take to the woods having never tried the exact setup that they will be hunting with. Shoot the same arrows, broadheads, & quiver if one will be on your bow when you hunt. Failure is a great teacher and I'm a career student!

Ha!!!! What a trying day of arrow making and tuning.... I thought earlier my shafts were weak. I made one trim, and something told me to shoot arrows I know were flying great....and they kicked and flew squirrelly. So once again, I cheked my brace height.....was fine. Couldnt figure it out....then after many border line bad words, lots of anger, walking away and coming back....I loaded an arrow, and just looked it over in the bow, and thats when I noticed it. My arrow was angling pretty hard nose down..then I noticed a small bunched up ball like thing on my serving. It had let go apparantly, and allowed my nocking points to slip upwards on the string by about 3/8 of an inch. All day racking my brain, for THAT... Maybe wheel bows are the simple bows after all? UGH...

Good thing I had an xtra string. Im breaking it in and stretching it out. Got it mostly done stretching, set, tied , and glued my nock points on. Yes, I shot all the arrows including bare shaft again. Everything seems fine again...but I may need to fine tune my broadhead arrows wiith a small trim.... gonna get my bow back in order forst...one thing at a time.

AHHHHHHH....., the trials continue. .....urrrrr...

So...... the good news????? I trimmed my footed arrow back from 29.5" to 29" AFTER I got my bow string stabilized, tuned her in right nice, I did. So I slaps on the tuffhead I had SOOOO much trouble with.... perfect flight, and I mean PRIMO! I'll give her specs a bit later, but im telling you, its got great FOC and weight. However, because I had to trim, she isnt as heavy as I was hoping for but dang sure close enough. The footed shaft is good looking, and a pleasure to shoot both with target point and broadhead, makes no difference.

The bad news.... you'd think I would learn. UGH, it still pains me. I spent a lot of time on my Doug firs for practice arrows. I even went so far as to purdy em up singeing them for a neat effect. Had em tuned and dialed in perfectly. ......perfectly that is, with my nocking points 3/8" to high from the failed serving. Now, they are not flying as good and unfortunately they are borderline stiff. If I do everything perfect, they fly, but if not...sour apples. Before I found the problem, I had to mess up badly to get sour apples with them arrows. So now, I'll either just live with it as long as I can stand it, or tomorrow I will turn them 425 gr heads into 450gr and see how they do. I might be stuck because they fly with 425gr really good if my release is perfect . Ugh....all dag gummed 12 of them... Ahhhh....woe is me.... why am I so unobservant so often...ugh... might be a fantastic time to try them 4x4 fletching kirk wants me to do...lol

Remember; getting everything ready is just a part of the tradition of traditional bowhunting. We're supposed to be enjoying this!

Today, did not feel like enjoyment! Frustrating!!!!! Im doing better now that it got dark and halted my work lol! I'll take up the task tomorrow though. I did get satisfaction from seeing my work pay off with my broadhead arrows. My Target arrows are another task yet to come...
