Not to worry Tony. If nothing else, your support through tags will help build a bigger and better herd....so its never a waste, even if you dont get one.

Good luck! I've never gone elk hunting, seems like fun.

Seems like a fair bit of work. You're not gonna drag one out. I've never quartered game in the field.

Most of our Elk mountains are seriously steep. A friend invited me to one of his honey holes but added that you better not shoot one in certain places because a helicopter couldn't get one out of those hollows! Being the only one with an Elk tag puts a fellow on his own, I would just have to call friends or say something meaningful over the Elk carcass and leave!

I've heard the same about Dall rams...you shoot one, then kiss it goodbye as it tumbles into the abyss. Probably hard NOT to shoot, but you have to have the recovery route running in your mind before you release.

I once took a two week hunting trip in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. They should name ours cliff mountains!

cliff mountains sound scary, I would love to go see the Appalachian mountains, is that where you are going?

Yep; you can come up on some straight drop off cliffs. But a large part of the Elk area has been strip mines and reclaimed, not as bad. At least you have some access roads.

I can't get over how much that area looks like Northern Arkansas around my folk's place. Its surely no coincidence that Arkansas Elk pops dwell largely in that same type terrain.
