scouting day??

#1 Post by JBaker01 »

Ahh, just sitting here at the kitchen table, cup of coffee thinking about walking some familiar woods and seeing what the deer are up to. Could go out in the kayak or the skiff but don't want to go out there with the he summertime boating traffic. Some of y'all's pics and posts have me slobbering for deer season and early morning tree stand sits.

80 90 degrees with 150% humidity!? But it is eastern NC - so be it. Should have been out there fore daylight but family duties got me waiting til 10 then I'll go in the hottest part the day! Lol

Morning tradhunter crew! Hope y'all had a great 4th and still have all ten.

Yup, all ten still attached. Nothing better than a little pre-season...except maybe...pre-season and stumpin' at the same time.

I remember that heat down there. I was stationed at camp lejuene in Jacksonville. Gets way to hot for my liking. We had a cold front a few weeks back so I was able to get out to state land spots and have a look see. I don't really scout since I know the area but I do look to see if there is anything new going on as far as new hunters in the area. The next time it rains I'll be out there again

I was supposed to go out with my hunting partner this morning for a little scouting, stumping, and stand moving but he had to cancel. Got to be there early this time of year and can't stay long, too hot. He saw a good one last week, pretty high rack for this time, still growing. I plan to set my Cam when we do go.

Well between thunder boomers the scouting was almost discouraging! Let me explain.

So two years really since I been in this area but I have hunted this area for 25yrs. Been a wet yr so knew it was gonna be a lot of water before I ever went. Get there and the whole place has changed grown up so thick. Luckily my #1 place has a brand new fire path cut to it, really recut, they had controlled burned the front section. So first pic spot is good, good sign too. Got hit by a storm in there but no Lightning!

Then I went into Cambodia I think - Cambodia is probably not as thick! I got into some old areas and just not anywhere I could find of some old sets?? Deer could walk by and you not see them, they'd have to be within 10' to see them.

Went into another spot and macheted my way in there! It looks more promising the deeper I got. I didn't find a good stand site but need to investigate further in there, killed a good doe in there in gun season that was being pushed by hounds. In fact I like this spot for late season as I know the dog runners hounds will be pushing deer in there a lot. The deer are like rabbits when being pushed by hounds, they do big circles! So listen enough and you can cut them off. It is deeper woods, you can be lost forever! I tell newbies to bring compass and NEVER go east - pure wilderness and jungle. I will revisit this area with my still weed eater and a blade! I think I can make something of this spot, just got to tune it.

Last place was easiest as I can park on main road and walk down power line. Just wanted to check it for paths, crossings and tracks. I was halfway down the line and I found a older wood set the dog runners used to use, I killed deer out of it myself but it was broke and on the ground. I went to continue up the line but when I looked up the powerline through the brush I saw?? Ears! About 100/125 yards? So clicked my fingers Mak my black lab went to heel, he had seen her too! Knew he was gonna break!! But he didn't he did awesome. We stood still and this doe and a second walked towards us, got within? 65/70 yards. Then I turned away and walked out, they spooked and jumped but at least the Mak didn't run them!

I think the Lord felt bad for the torment of the day I went through! lol - probably though ok I'll let this fool at least see a deer!

I met an old friend on the road, Mr. Frank, he lives not far away and at 63 lived hunted this area all his life. He knows how much I hunt and told me this yr will be good as he is seeing a lot of deer on the road! I trust any info this man gives me and if he says it will be good then it will be. This made me feel a little better! Just explained I don't know how I'll get in the woods to kill em! He said we need youngins up here to get in there and get them! At 44 I am still one of the "youngins" Love Mr Frank! He is one of a kind.

He also told me the Bears are out in force! He has been seeing a few and a few hitting his corn patch one that is over 500lbs. Said seen some other smaller ones from 150 to 300lbs. All the farms have corn so I knew the Bears would be shallow this year; on years where the fields have soy beansthe Bears stay deep towards catfish lake. So I'll bear hunt this year my dream is to get a eastern NC bear with trad gear.

Well full circle and I write this the next morning sitting at my kitchen table drinking coffee, reading TradHunter thinking about going back out and scouting today. This will be my last chance of my staycation as I leave for Charleston tomorrow for oldest daughters third set of soccer tourneys of the summer.

Y'all have a great day, season is not too terribly far away! I'll try to post a pic of the deer on the powerline.

Shoot often, practice practice practice - scout too!

Love this site, sorry for the long post, just? dreaming of season!

You done got my neck swelling up now! Made what my wife calls a "play date" last night with my hunting partner, we will try to be out at first light in the morning to move a Ladder stand or two. Got to do what you can before it gets too hot. I just saw the local weather and giving strong storms so we may get hindered. The wife picks at me because she will soon be lonely again, she calls herself a "Hunting Widow"!

Thanks y'all! I can talk,

Just envisioning early season back straps! Liver and onions, heart, burger. ---

Good scout today too, will write it up, these woods a little prettier though I just don't have the confidence in this area as my old "Cambodia" woods. Thunder boomers cut me some slack today, didn't have to deploy my tarp to stay dry. Lol

Got a little early scouting done this morning before the humidity got too high. Moved one ladder stand and reset it. Not far from where it was but more concealed, it was a little too open before. We put a salt block out near it last year (same hollow), not only was the salt gone but there was a knee deep hole where it sat.

It's odd....they seem to eat up salt in nice to warm weather...but then about completely abandon it come fall and winter.
The element of surprise can never be replaced by persistence.
