Bummin' tonight...

#1 Post by Captainkirk »

Sorry if'n I ain't my ol' normal bubbly self tonight...my best ol' buddy Dillon the Cat has been AWOL since Saturday and it's not looking good. He's done this before in his long illustrious career as a cat, but he's gettin' mighty long in the tooth, and the last couple years has rarely ventured out of the yard. I have searched the yard, garden, house, and surrounding neighborhood for literally hours on end, called animal control (no dice) and even searched the park that butts up to the far corner of our lot. No sign found. Old cats, if they go to their maker, usually end up curled up in their favorite rocker or sofa when they leave this world, they don't vanish like an alien abduction. Me and this old cat go way back, just about 20 years now, and boy...do I have the stories to tell about this rascal. But I'm pretty torn up about it tonight and hoping against the clock that he'll come strolling back up the driveway all nonchalant-like, as is his nature. But cats can only go 3 days without water, so unless somebody is feeding and hydrating my little guy...it's not promising

My li'l buddy, pestering me to share my dinner....

Hey bro we just lost our family dog of 13+ years a few weeks ago. I know your pain. It is worse not really knowing what happened...been there before too. Who knows Kirk, cats can be independent and often can find enough food and water on their own for a good spell.
It's been my experience with animals, that when their time comes and they are able, will go find a suitable spot alone. I hope this isn't the case but take heart that no I'll willed thing happened to him.
The element of surprise can never be replaced by persistence.

Thanks for the well-wishes and understanding. I had a freak-me-out moment this morning, stayed home from work as I had a Dr. appointment around noon and a late return tonight, so I'm at at work now...I was sitting at the kitchen table eating lunch by myself; the wife had taken the granddaughter to the dentist...the house was quiet except for me munching on a roast beef sammy, no TVs on or anything else, and out of nowhere I swear I heard a faint and weak meow. I spent the next half hour frantically searching and calling his name but it was not repeated. Dunno, maybe my imagination is working OT. It just kills me wondering if he is trapped or stuck someplace, but when he has been before, he's been pretty vocal about it. It's one thing to know your pet is gone; it's another altogether to not know if he's trapped somewhere within rescue distance and you don't know it...

Sorry about your cat!
Mine was a Farrel, and he would be in and out all day and night. After having a Yot on a yard trail pic he is out in the day time only!
My last cat of 21 yrs had cancer, and never came home one day. Vet said he went off to dye. Sad Sad!

Thanks, Alan...and good to see you back, buddy!
It's been over two weeks now so I'm sort of resigned to the fact my buddy has moved on to a better place. Though he was old (92 in human years) and not as spry as he used to be, he didn't show signs of being ready to depart this world, but then neither do many humans. I still go out each night and call him, but not a peep in reply. Still, stranger things have happened, so I keep the porch light on.

Well, last night marks a year since my little buddy made his exit stage right...and I still miss the heck out of him. Someday we will probably get a new cat, but not yet...we are sort of enjoying the hiatus after 40 years of pet ownership (my fish don't count). Goodnight, Dillon...wherever you are.
