First Traditional Harvest.....Manitoba Black Bear

#1 Post by Hunter 709 »

Well it finally happened June 12th at 8:50pm at my bear bait. I was in my treestand at 5:30pm with no activity until 8:30pm. I was starting to think that I wouldn't see anything at all. Then a young bear came in to the bait and stayed for 20 minutes until he spooked off by another bear approaching. I grabbed my bow and waited to see what would happen. It was actually two bears that approached the bait and one was a larger male, it didn't take long until he was standing broadside. My clicker when off and the arrow was on it's way. My right/left was good but my shot was high. I waited until the crashing stopped and got down from my tree and went home for the night. I had a weird calm feeling that I've never had before when I've made a questionable shot and had to leave an animal over night. I hoped that my shot was enough to end his life quickly. I took my calmness as a good omen.

My buddy "Stickfinger" and I were back at the bait site at 6:30am and picked up the blood trail. We found my bear 150 yards from the bait, dead on the forest floor. He's not huge and pretty scared up and rubbed but he was the biggest bear I saw at my bait and there was no way I was letting him walk on the last day of the season. I'm so glad my poor shot was lethal and that I was able to harvest this Manitoba black bear.

Here are a few pictures of my first big game kill with my recurve. I used my Cari-bow Tuktu recurve, 56# at 28" (that I bought from Larry). I used Carbon Express Heritage 150 arrows with 200gr Zwicky broadheads with 100gr brass inserts for a total weight of 525gr.

Great job man, I am proud for you!

Good set up, good shot. That is awesome.
What a feeling.

When I take a large animal with my longbow, I am always amazed
at the simple, eloquent, and yet completely effective killing power
of a well placed sliver of sharp steel.

The woods are quiet, a gentle thump from the bow, the barely
audible swish of the arrow and the distinct noise made as it
encounters flesh. The grunt of the animal and the sounds
as it leaves the area. The eerie silence of the woods once more.
Gosh, I love it so.

Thanks for your story and good pictures. I felt like I was there with you.
