#2 Buck Down

#1 Post by Nomad »

Having some good luck this season.

Was not going to hunt during this warm spell, but I’ve been seeing a lot of activity in the middle of the day despite the heat, including a nice eight pointer mating a doe in the field near my home at 12 noon.

Headed out early about 1 PM. When I got within about 100 yards of where I was going to sit, I put a little Tinks 69 on my rubber boots and then continued to my stand.

I was all settled in sitting there with the bow across my lap, checking the wind direction and watching mostly downwind.

All of a sudden from behind me and maybe 15 yards off to the side of the trail I had walked in on comes this nice buck running right towards me and suddenly stops 10 yards broadside. I didn’t even have an arrow on the string yet so I quickly knocked an arrow stood up, but he took off again. He stopped at about 50 yards and I gave a couple soft grunts. He looked and then came walking right at me. He was coming head-on and stopped when he was at 10 yards. Then he looked right up at me in the tree and stared me down for a couple minutes, seemed like an hour. Finally, he looked away, turned to his left and started walking slowly, at which time I slowly drew and released an arrow at about eight or 10 yards. I saw the hit was perfect and he ran out of sight over a little hill. I packed up right away and slowly took the trail and found him about 100 yards expired.

Had a great season in New Jersey now going to try PA until I head for Maine.

Thanks for reading. Good luck to everybody!

Deer was basically an eight pointer but had two short points over an inch off his brow also.

160# dressed, 19.5” wide.

Zipper 56# longbow, Muzzy 125’s, Gold Tips.

Thanks Captain, yes had some good hunting this season here in NJ. Now I'll go across the river and try my luck in PA, before I head up to Maine for rifle season.
