Re: Big jims cut off saw
I quit playing with woodies long ago... just a thing of mine...I had terrible experiences with ash shafting with so much run out, well...we won't get into that...tried pignut hickory and gave them to a friend...nose dived for me and he!
Big arrow builder friend said he buys in bulk..used to buy 100 to get 2-3 dozen good'uns...now has to buy a thousand to get 2-3 matched dozen...
You're paying for good stuff and a couple woodie guys I know swear by Wapati... that is the old RRA outfit under new owner, yes?
Surewood, I've heard a lot of things that wouldn't lead me to try them, but now I'm carbon all the way...just VERY old wood!

I dont think RRA exist anymore. It was a shaft company I believe. Im unsure if it is now Wapiti Archery or not, but it seems like I remember reading that somewhere else too.
Surewoods diameters are far enough off, I cant effectively use my tru center taper tool. They wont fit the guides too often. Most are to big for the 11/32 guide and too small for the 23/64 guide, making tapering a huge pain in the A. I never had those issues with Wapiti. Right now they are revamping their website, so its down while they rework it, but are a phone call away. It will be going again soon from what he says on fbook.

just wait till u get your bow. I have some 400 spine you can test out as well as 600. I think they are 29 1/4. should be able to shoot them and get close to figuring out what you need before spending alot of $ on them. I do have experience a couple 500 spine but they are not goldtip.

Oh man James that is an extremely nice thing to offer. I will gladly accept it as It most certainly will save time and money. That way you can also see what you think about the bow too.

Re: Big jims cut off saw
I forgot you have those heavy tuffheads. I would wager the 500 spine will be too weak if you are putting 300-400 grains up front especially with a cut to center bow.
Re: Big jims cut off saw
what's the bow weight ur wanting? each archery and bow combo is different and the 500 may be weak. fwiw I shoot 250 grain points on 600 spine out of 43#

Re: Big jims cut off saw
I do know our Maddogs are not cut to center, and require quite a bit weaker arrow then the center cut Samick recurves do, yet I can interchange all 3 of our arrows with our own MD PP bows here in our house. In comparison, with same Lb of bow (45) and draw length (28) and point weight (300), I had to go from using 65/70 at 28'' bop with Samick center cut recurve, to 55/60 at 28'' bop Maddog PP non center cut, with the exact same 300gr heads. So there is quite a difference in being center cut or not, plus each bow can be fickle in it's own way. Carbon is less sensitive to spine needs across the board and covers a lot wider range of "sweet spot" arrow flight for various set ups, plus a center cut bow is also less sensitive and will often shoot a couple spines sizes of arrows well. Not true with non center cut bows as they are a bit more particular in their needs. However, once a person hits 300gr of head, spine needs drop off tremendously. The difference in spine needs going from 300gr to 400gr is fractional, and often ends up being the same arrow, only 1/4''- 3/8'' shorter at least on woods. Not at all true when going from 100gr to 200gr, or 200gr to 300gr. as the spine needs will be significant enough that a jump up in spine is often required, and sometimes 2 jumps up, in order to stay around the same length arrow and get good flight.
Another factor that enters in with my "new to be" bow, is I am aiming for getting a 40lb bow, where as I have been shooting 45lb. Best thing to do, is to try a couple sizes, likely a 500 and 400. Im certain I'll be using either a 375gr or 400 gr head, one or the two, depending on total arrow weight and foc. Im really hoping to get the 500's to fly, because I will land exactly where I want to be in TAW at 29'' arrows. I can say that 29'' 400 carbons are too stiff for all three of our maddogs at 45lb, 46lb, and 48lb draw, with up to a 450 gr head.

Re: Big jims cut off saw
what is TAW? Im excited to see what kind of FoC you will be getting, I bet it will be pretty dang high, especially if you turn the cresting toward the front and all that jazz.
I like shooting both 400 and 500 spine out of my maddog. I have the 500's set up for a 300 grain point 27.5" and a 250 grain 28.5" but I think I am borderline with the 250 grain as it seems to be more picky about my release. My 400's with 250 grain points at 30.5" fly really well. I never worked out what they need for a 300 grain point.
I kind of want to try out a half dozen tapered carbons one of these days.
I do admit I have been wondering about why you are dropping a couple pounds off your bow weight?
