These barrels are 30 gal. The pic of the bear on the deer feeder was my buddies dad about 100 yards from his house. We have since put a barrel there. We have 4 barrels out of 5 active in that area. I also have a barrel in another county that hasn’t been hit yet. But its early and my neighbor has a pic of one on his deer feeder. So maybe it will happen. It’s kinda exciting if they will just hang on until season.

I hunted with Tom and several other good hunters on bear quest II
Many years ago. Took a bear and I think everyone in camp save one took a bear that year. I met Barry wendsel on that hunt and hunted with him Gene and Tom and some of the others on some hog hunting in Texas. Great bunch and I was very humbled with the quality of hunters in that group. I killed fairly early in the hunt that year so bowdoc got a lesson in frying walleye southern style. That boy was a character. He killed a bear that year carrying one wood arrow. He actually was confronted by 2 game wardens the very evening of his kill. He didn’t have his orange on. Yhey let him go because he was carrying a self bow and one wood arrow. Didn’t think he would be a threat to a bear anyway. Lol he proved them wrong not long after they left him alone. True story!! He was a corker as they say. Thanks for bringing back great memories with your story

Mike, how is it going now? any action? I sure hope that you manage a good hunt. I'm not going out of my way to hunt one but if one was to show up at my back door during season, I might be slipping out to sling an arrow. where I live, it could happen very easily if one of my other neighbors didn't shoot it first. I haven't even checked to see when the season is LOL.

It’s going good. We have 4 out of 5 bait stations being hit and ironically the only one that hasn’t been attended was the hot one the last time it was baited 3 or 4 years ago. My buddy actually killed there before. So I think its a a matter of time. Our worst enemy would be if the acorns started falling. They love acorns and can travel long distance and not go hungry. It’s a gamble. In Arkansas as you probably know it’s only legal to bait on private ground. I’m not sure I agree with that but it is what it is.

Yes, a lot of varibles for sure plus the fruit trees will be getting ripe( a major food source as well.) Arkansas was once known as the Bear State and for good reason. My grandfather had an old huge mummified bear paw that hung outside by the door bell (actual bell). my great grandfather had killed it with a muzzleloader while squirrel hunting here in the mountains. My grandfather was a bee keeper too and hated the bears for good reason. I have sat many times in a treestand and listened to a bear turning rocks over and busting up logs looking for food. They can be super quiet or super noisy. But normally when I had a bear around, never saw a deer. I accidently pushed a bear off of a fresh fawn kill but when I realized it, I backed off. It didn't go very far and meant to finish the meal. a lot can happen between now and when you get to hunt, wishing you the best
