Now I gone and done it.....
I know, I know. I'm a woody kinda guy. It seems...natural.
So it seemed kinda unnatural for me to be at Bass Pro shopping for carbons.
But that's just what I did, and here's why:
You remember I bought that Bear Tamerlane? Well I was shooting my custom cedars (of the wrong spine) because that was all I had at the time. Then I watched Jimmy Blackmon shooting carbons out of his Tamerlane on You Tube and I asked him a few questions; he replied that carbons flew a LOT flatter and a lot quicker off a low-poundage (35#) target bow than aluminum, and more consistent than wood. Plus, they were the lightest. (on a target bow, light = good) And so, I got to thinking.....
And so, I wound up going to Bass Pro to look for some bare carbon shafts. They didn't have any in the spine I was looking for, but what they DID have was some ready-to-shoot Beman Centershots with 4" 3-fletch with helical in the right spine....so out came the Plastic Fantastic from my wallet (ouch!) and here I sit with a half dozen mighty 'spensive shish-kabob skewers.
I thought this archery stuff was supposed to be a cheap hobby. Seems like I spend more money on this hobby than I did on my other ones!
But...the Tamerlane is a trophy class bow. I guess it deserves trophy class arrows to go with it.
Anyway, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
Besides, they LOOK like woodies....

You ask a feller that seems to know a little about the subject (Jimmy B.) so I feel you will be happy with the results. Carbon is the cats meow for me, not traditional enough for some, others (like you) don't feel right using them, but you can't argue with the benefits. I also enjoy using natures carbon (cane) when hunting, just love the look and feel, I hunted this past season with them several times. You can still use your woodies as you like Kirk but you will never turn back now!
Re: Now I gone and done it.....
No excuses now cap'n. I'd say you got a shooting machine now. You start watching Jimmy you'll be gap shooting again. Lol . He seems to be a genuinely nice guy . I've ask him questions on other forums and he's always been very helpful. I hope to meet him at the tn. Classic I think he's one of the good guys in archery today, I know he's shared a lot of knowledge on you tube !

Re: Now I gone and done it.....
So, I s'pose you all want to hear about my carbon 'epic fail' at the range tonight?
Sorry, can't help you.....
No way I was gonna wait for spring to try out these new 'tree screws', so I packed up the Tamerlane and my new carbons and trundled them off to the indoor 3D range at Bass Pro. I shot one out of my Baby Ben the other day; he didn't like 'em. Not gonna argue with him; I didn't buy them for him anyhow.
These were left full length with 100gr tips, so at full draw there's a bit o' fat hangin' over the old belt buckle (extra shaft length) but that's OK...this is not a hunting rig.
I decided to start short a 10 yards to get my range; first shot was low. After the third shot I decided I'd better back it up. Carbons are expensive...
15 yards, same story. So I pushed the foam target back against the wall (20 yards) and boys...it's like this. If I miss it ain't the bow OR the arrows. And smooth? I said once it was like a hot knife through butter. Well, better yet, it's like pulling open a screen door with one of those hydraulic openers...yeah, there's resistance felt, but it's smooth, even and 'cushioned' feeling. It's almost like shooting a compound because you can hold that thing at full draw all the live-long day. And Jimmy B. was right...the carbons come off that thing like an RPG, sizzling like a pan full of breakfast sausage and flat as a pancake. (damn; I'm making myself hungry!) They don't dawdle or meander on their way to the target, Jack. No stopping to poke at worms on the sidewalk with a stick. I could tell tonight, if I had one of those fancy-Dan Tamerlane sights instead of shooting pure instinctive, I would have had some collateral damage at 20 yards. That's fact. I had arrows less than an eighth of an inch apart and some touching. I don't regret buying this bow, or the carbons at all; in fact, I can't wait to shoot them again.
Now, if'n I could only get this stupid grin off my face.....

Is it fair to say you like the carbon arrows now ???
Re: Now I gone and done it.....
Kirk ; remember the story about using a bobber and worms on a split bamboo fly rod .
