Luck of the draw!

#1 Post by Captainkirk »

I can't believe it. I put in for my Illinois Beach hunting permit at the end of August, with my 3 choice weeks being the last 3 weeks in October. Saturday's mail brought me my permit for the week of October 8-14, my #1 choice! The futurecast for that week shows warm temps so I'll likely need my Thermacell to ward off the skeeters again this year. Now I'm gonna have to get busy and start prepping. I never expected to even draw a permit, much less draw my #1 choice!

Congrats. Is that the same place you hunted last year?

Yes! And I plan on sitting the same spot. It's like an old friend.

Well, my week has come and gone. While I saw no deer, there was plenty of sign, and the weather could not have been better if I mail-ordered it. Every afternoon I hunted required no more than a long-sleeve camo Henley, no overshirt or jacket, even up til end of legal shooting light. I was expecting with the warm temps to get eaten alive by skeeters, but out of the whole week I only got one bite, no Thermacell or repellent needed! It was probably the best weather I've ever hunted in. So the fact that the freezer remains empty doesn't really bother me much. Hunting is so much more than taking game home with you. Had I taken a deer, this would have been the best year ever, but seeing as how everything else went so well, I'm not complaining...not one bit!
